Opening MISTAKES: common/specific aor TRAPS : I hope some other players will step up and help out with this thread. Playing much blitz & ten minute Chess lately I see some mistakes repeatedly, so just want to point out some of them to be avoided.
So any frequent mistakes you are seeing, Please post if you will. And I'd like to include any "Traps" anyone wants to share. Regards, Craig A.C.
(While I wont declare all these certainly "lost", they certainly give the edge or more to the other player. Uh, and they probably ARE lost vs Kasparov, Anand or Kramnik. Probably even Leko! -grin-

Some mistakes vs 1.e4 openings : Scotch Game 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nxd4 ? and WT gets advantage after 5.Qxd4
I've heard players state they believed this good for black with the idea that the Queen should not be moved early or it will be subject to harrassment. Often that's a good general rule. But not here. The queen is not weak; it is strong and centralized! In a position where BL does not have many minor pieces left to kick the Queen with. And a move like ...c5 to do it gains him nothing but a weak d5 square. Common moves here that work better:
4... (Bc5/Nf6/even Qf6 or Qh5 or even the somewhat passive but solid...d6)
For EG after 4...Bc5 then if 5.Nc6 most common is bxc6 and to play for later ...d5 using the c6 jpawns support. But also 5.Nxc6 Qf6!? threatening 6....Qxf2 can recover then by 6....Qxc6.
****
Center Game: For some reason Fritz has played this but its not good:
1.e4 e5 2.d4 d5 ? Trust me.
****
REALLY BAD IS:
1.e4 e5 2.d4 f6 ? 3.dxe5 fxe5 ?? 4.Qh5+ and if Either 4...g6 or Ke7 5.Qxe5+ is just tooo painful for BL.
***
Then there is Diamano's Opening: Some will keep playing it anyway, but its "difficult" for BL after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6? 3. Nxe5! or even the natural 3.Bc4!?
Trust me
*******
A Trap: Sicilian Dragon
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.f4 Bg7? (correct is Nc6 first here)
7.e5 dxe5 8.fxe5 now the Worst for BL is Ng4?? 9.Bb5+ and BL drops a piece, or a Queen with worst play. It continues either: 8....Ng4?? 9.Bb5+ Bd7 10.Qxg4! because the Bd7 is pinned and cannot recapture on g4. But even worse is:
8....Ng4 9.Bb5+ Kf8 ??? 10.Ne6+ ! fxe6 11.Qxd8+Kf7 12.o-o+ Bf6 13.Qxh8
and things are lookin BAD!! [:-)

Damiano's Defense While not strong, the mistake is not 2... f6, but 3... fxe5. The correct defense is 3... Qe7 4. Nf3 Qxe4+, which wins back the pawn.

e4 Traps Another e4 trap comes in the petroffs defense

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 Nxe4?? 4. Qe2

Black loses tempo trying to defend the knight and if he does move the night lets say 4... Nf6 5. Nc3+ black loses his queen

This is a good link! geocities.com/lifemasteraj/chess_traps.html

p.s: when ever I write this link with http:// , the portion after .com disappears (!?)

Petroffs Defense 3. Nxe5 Nxe4 is the Damiano Variation of the Petroffs if anyone would like to look it up

Too many 1.e4 traps Here is a QGD trap:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 Blacks fourth move appears to give up a pawn due to 5.cxd5 exd5 6.Nxd5 with the assistance of the pin of the f6 Knight.... However 6...Nxd5! 7.Bxd8 Bb4+! and White must give back the Q and Black is a knight for a pawn up.

Petroff Defense "Another e4 trap comes in the petroffs defense

~juve_leo

black could save the queen and lose the rook intesd however, but the proper dense is:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 ...

Spanish Opening 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.c3 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8.d4 if Nxe4 Bd5!! bishop fork... the moves are questionable but has happen to me

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 b5 5.Bb3 Nf6 6.0-0 d6 7.d4?? exd4 8.Nxd4 Nxd4 9.Qxd4 c5 and the bishop is gone... once again this is more like a mistake, anyway in every trap theres a mistake involved.

jsemmens To a player that doesnt know the Petroffs and is asked to play it as black, the player would most likely take the white pawn. I play the petroffs alot as black against e4, but lately, i have gotten bored of it

Another Too many 1.e4 traps (Is that Possible ?! :) theswiftone ... Okay here's another from a Dutch Defense :
Brad Jenison(X) - Craig Collister(X) 1987 APCT Regional Team Championship :
1.c4 f5 2.d4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 Ne4 5.Nxe4 fxe4 6.Bg5 ?? exf3 ! 7.Bxd8 Bb4+ 8.Qd2 Bxd2+ 9.Kxd2 fxg2 Resigns .... 10.Bxg2 Kxd8 0-1

aqeel Thanks for contributing that great trap site! The quantity there is overwhelming. About your computer problem; I got there fine by pasting only this part:
geocities.com/lifemasteraj/chess_traps.html
My Explorer just puts in the " http:// " part automatically, and it took me there No Problem. Have you tried it without the http part. Nothing disappeared on mine.
