♡ 27 ( +1 | -1 ) What is the best older chess player of all timeI think that when a chess player grow old he gains experience and this is good. But when he reaches some age, his completeness fall down. Even if I be wrong, I think the best OLD chess player of all time is Korchnoi.

♡ 36 ( +1 | -1 ) Maybe she's not the bestBut we have a woman at our chess club who's 92 years old and still plays tournament chess every wednesday evening. I hear she plays in other tournaments as well so she may play as many as 4 or 5 over the board rated games every week.
She's about 1550 but it took all I had just to get a draw from her. :)
May all of us be that happy and healthy when we're that age.

♡ 10 ( +1 | -1 ) Just a mentioning fact...Alekhine was the only Grand Master to die with the championship crown... My vote of all time would be him...

♡ 29 ( +1 | -1 ) Korchnoi ...... is in his 70's (right?) and is still rated in the top 100 in the world, and is more active on the tournament circuit then many of his peers (in rating).
It's a great testimony of a 'man who just loves chess'. A lot of the top players in history just quit when they can't compete with the top 10 anymore. Not this man!

♡ 12 ( +1 | -1 ) A thought...How would Korchnoi match up against Alekhine?... I think the thread stated the best old chess player of all time...

♡ 20 ( +1 | -1 ) Andor LilientalIs the oldest GM hi born in 1911. Some authors write Arthur William Dake is oldest becouse he born in 1910(Portland,Oregon)but they dont have evidence hi is alive.

♡ 30 ( +1 | -1 ) UnfortunatelyCapablanca never really lived long enough to be "old".
IMO Lasker was the best old player, proving he deserved to be considered among the world's best--if not the best--years after losing the world championship and nearing the twilight of his life in tournaments like New York 1924 and Moscow 1935.

♡ 10 ( +1 | -1 ) older chess playersI see that Smyslov was still rated 2482 in October 2001 at the age of 80. Anyone know how he's doing now?

♡ 44 ( +1 | -1 ) Alekhine and Capablanca died young (early 50's). Dake was the oldest Gm while alive but his strength was greatly reduced. When he was in his 70's his uscf rating was approx. 2350. Lasker was playing world class chess in his mid 60's but declined shortly thereafter. Smyslov is strong but plays only in senior events (they give these old guys a nap between moves). It's got to be korchnoi. approaching 73, he just married a 14 yr. old schoolgirl!
Just kidding!

♡ 27 ( +1 | -1 ) Walter MuirHow about Walter Muir. At 94 he was still playing cutting edge correspondence chess at the highest levels and making people (like Hans Berliner) sweat to answer his innovations. (See "The System")
He never declined. He played fantastic chess until the day he died.
